doesn't the Xserve have firewire (400 & 800) and at least 2 full
length
PCI slots?!?

y theres firewire, but will delta or motu software install and work on
udf
volumes,
and how do you access the frontend :)

Attach a keyboard, a mouse and a monitor? - Or use Remote Desktop?

Does Xserve really come with udf formatted disc in advance? - Then you
could just put in a HFS+ formatted drive, install OS X and boot from
that?!?

Dunno, but to me, an Xserve looks just like a Mac in a slim case... It
has a different mobo, but after all, it has all the expansion ports
and stuff it needs.

maybe that changed recently, but as far as i know i never bought such a
server exactly for that reason; it can only boot into OSX server.
that would means UDF and that would mean no resource forks and that would
mean even if a driver works you can not control the settings :)

why should a server-computer be able to boot into a client OS ?
there are G4s which can not even boot into OS 9, hehe ! :)

There's hardly any difference between OS X Server and the normal OS X. Mostly the additional software that gets installed. The core subsystems are all the same.

Even if for whatever reason you can only run OS X Server on an Xserve, I seriously doubt it would not work on an HFS+ partition. And after that there's nothing preventing you from running your audio apps.
