Hiya Os,

I'm using ShareIt! ( www.shareit.com ) for the credit card billing stuff. They are not cheap (take roughly 15% or something), but they had been very reliable for me so far. They have a huge load of options for everything, but they might not be suitable for Donationware as they only allow for services with fixed prices.

I havn't used PayPal so far, because you need to have a credit card yourself to sign up for their service (which is a very bureacrazytic process)...

As for demos...

I recommend putting out a Public Beta with a some-weeks time limit (I'm simply using the machine's date info, as most users can't switch their dates due to Logic's XSKey protection) to get word spread.

Then I'd always supply a fully functional demo version, with the least annoying limitation possible. Zebra's demo for instance will simply play random notes after 10 Minutes, but still allow for full access. I have never heard any complaint about that (except for 2 or 3 people who paid for it, forgot to fill in serial numbers and thought it was a bug).

As for copy protection (you didn't ask, but it's related), this is a whole different story with thousands of contradicting truths. The only thing I do is a serial number that is bound to the customer's name, hence provides a little safety against "casual piracy". - For the easy path, I know many successful companies who do not have copy protection at all. They simply provide a secret download link to the full version once the customer has bought the product.

Cheers,

;) Urs

I'm getting close to releasing a new plug-in which will be the first that I think is worth charging a little money for. Unfortunately I know nothing about either the e-commerce side of things, or the technical aspects of time-locking software, license keys etc.

If anyone can give me any pointers I'd be very grateful.

I'm not thinking of charging much (I may even make it shareware i.e. voluntary payment) so whatever solution I go with needs to be cost-effective for small payments.

I'd also be interested to know which of the following people think works best:
- date-limited demo (e.g. works for two weeks then dies)
- time-limited demo (e.g. works for 10 minutes every time you run it)
- crippled demo (some features disabled)
- unusable demo (e.g. audio cut-out every 10 seconds)
- nagware demo (fully featured but with an annoying splash screen, like Graphic Converter)

thanks,
os.
