Objective Audio Quality Measurement

Hi,

i'm a computer science student and
since few months ago i'm working on a thesis about compressed audio,
in particular mpeg layer 3 (mp3).
I wonder if there is a tool, a library , an application or something similar
which could help me to "find" an objective measure of the quality of the audio
without listening tests (i mean compare a reference signal with a testing signal).
I read ITU-R BS.1387 and some other documents about this problem,
and also tried "pqeval" but they seems incomplete and give
"strange" results ...

does anyone could help me or just have the same troubles ?

thanks and
best regards,

Martino
