Hi Dominic,

There's no strict concept of a system wide volume. There's a concept of the default output device and the default system output device. That's probably what you're interested in (it's what sound prefs & AMS use.)

Look at kAudioHardwarePropertyDefaultOutputDevice and kAudioHardwarePropertyDefaultSystemOutputDevice in the CoreAudio framework.
