Just out of curiosity, why the decision to support the mpeg2 aac and
not mpeg4, considering the apparent rarity of mpeg2 aac and the
popularity of mpeg4?

No app claims MPEG-2 AAC as a file type so it will always have a
generic icon. If your app is going to create them then perhaps it
should supply an icon for them.
.aac is what you'd likely find out in the wild for those (very rare)
players which support MPEG-2 AAC
.mp2 is the de-facto file extension for MPEG-1, Layer 2 audio files so
don't use that.
