You imply that this is an either/or choice... It isn't. MPEG-4 AAC is defined as a superset or re-definitions of *some* of the tools that are first defined in MPEG-2 AAC. The low-complexity AAC profile is similar between the two standards.

What we are talking about here with ADTS files, is NOT the encoder or the decoder, but just a file format that can contain AAC data that was defined first in MPEG-2.

ADTS is used for raw bit stream types of uses of AAC, and is a simple file format for carrying AAC data around in. We're not expecting or desiring that this would become a mechanism for distributing AAC data around, but it does represents a lightweight and easy to parse container for AAC. Some encoders that are available will output ADTS files, so this seemed a reasonable option to us to provide support for this in CA.

Just out of curiosity, why the decision to support the mpeg2 aac and not mpeg4, considering the apparent rarity of mpeg2 aac and the popularity of mpeg4?

No app claims MPEG-2 AAC as a file type so it will always have a generic icon. If your app is going to create them then perhaps it should supply an icon for them.

.aac is what you'd likely find out in the wild for those (very rare) players which support MPEG-2 AAC

.mp2 is the de-facto file extension for MPEG-1, Layer 2 audio files so don't use that.
