I am building a networked audio solution based on Sam's esound driver. I have been experimenting with user space drivers to do that, but I found that kernel drivers deliver more precise timing and allow lower latencies. I will publish my results in about a month as a part of my thesis, but if you're interested, I can send you the source code of my driver. You can read about the project here:
