Well, as far as I can tell (writing as a ~user~), I am actually
endorsing the user-centric values of the Mac that Apple themselves
promote (and I guess, invented). Or are you saying that Apple's
guidelines regarding file extensions are themselves hostile to those values?

No, we are still in the Mac world. Unix may underpin the Mac now, but
it's the user-centric values of the Mac that your users want and expect,
not the developer-centric values like yours.
