Yes, this assumes that the effect can do mono in, stereo out.
Ok, but I seem to recall that some AUs don't behave this way, which is
why I wanted to verify this. Now that you've clarified this, I'll implement it
the way you say and if I come across AUs that don't work with it I'll
contact the makers of these AUs and ask them to fix it.

No - we've been down this path. The problem for this is that you end up
not being able to express any dependencies that exist between
configurations across buses - so, its just as incomplete and complex as
the current model. Urs had a wonderfully complex and horrible chart to
express this when we went through this sometime ago.
Ok. I'm a newbie, thus I didn't know about Urs' chart.

Anyway, I also much prefer that providing {-4, 2} really means using
anything from 1 to 4 inputs is valid.
