SDK 1.3.1 frustrations

I am just starting to investigate Core Audio (to be used under Cocoa).
I loaded CoreAudioSDK v1.3.1 and am running Xcode 1.2 on OSX 10.3.4.
I am attempting to build and run some of the examples in order to
familiarize myself with the code.
Issues I have come across so far:
1) A note needs to be added to the read me: CoreAudioSDK needs to be
installed BEFORE Xcode.
When I installed the SDK on top of XCode I found most of the examples
do not build for any number of reasons (mostly duplicate references).
When I Re-install XCode on top of the SDK I am able to compile the
examples.
2) Problems compiling examples ("out of the box", no modifications).
2a) HALLab fails to compile, HLDeviceWindowInfoController :
GetNumberRelatedDevices; GetRelatedDevices: undeclared.
2b) CAJava fails to compile, 1 error, unknown.
2c) AudioFileTools fails to compile, 1 error, unknown.
Before I spend a lot of time trouble shooting are there known issues?
