QuickTime MIDI

It used to be that QuickTime MIDI could be played through an external MIDI device. This capability seems to no longer exist. The option to set an external device is still there in System Preferences, but there doesn't seem to be any source of such options.
Anyone know if there is a way it is possible.
Would it be practical to write a QuickTime component to simply redirect MIDI to CoreMIDI?
Regards
David
