Brian,
You are correct. AU Lab uses both generic views under 10.3.9. The
cocoa generic view was originally built specifically for AU Lab and a
part of its source tree. With 10.4, we decided to break the cocoa
generic view out of AU Lab and put it in the system so that other
developers could use it in their audio apps as well.
I hope this clarifies things.

Hmm, unless I am mistaken, AU Lab appears to be presenting both
Carbon *and*
Cocoa generic views for AudioUnits under Panther, 10.3.9 with the
latest
QuickTime and CoreAudio SDK that are valid for Panther.
So it at least seems possible to build a host app that will run on
Panther and
present the Cocoa generic view under Panther.
Haven't tried it yet, though, nor have I looked for the related AU
Lab source...

It'd be nice to be able to support 10.3 users as well - is there
any sample code that shows how to do this directly?
You'd have to use the Carbon view for 10.3 users -
