The Default Output Unit - it sits on top of the HAL and manages much of
the device particularities so you don't have too. There's no additional
latency incurred by using this (or cost - in fact the Output Units have
a lot of code to optimise around the CPU usage as well)...
At this stage, I'd actually have to say that you need a very particular
reason in the general case to *not* use the AU HAL units.

The application basically reads MP3s and sends buffers to the sound
card.
