I have Sound Sticks as well and I have had them periodically drop
offline such that sound playback via them dies. The system is running
fine just no sound output. To fix I have simply unplugged and
replugged the USB connection for the Sound Sticks (sometimes have to
reselect them as the sound output device in the sound system
preference).
So far I have found no pattern to what triggers them to fall
offline... it my experience it hasn't been related to any particular
application. For me it happen at most once a week and more likely
once a month (or few month) in my experience (I almost always have
iTunes playing but often various sound generating Applications as
well).
Are your SoundSticks connected via a USB hub, including one in the
back of a monitor or a keyboard?
Recently I came across a Knowledge Base article that said (if I
remember it correctly) that that is not a reliable configuration; they
should be connected directly to one of the CPU's USB ports.
I have had them attached to either the ports on the tower or on the
back of the monitor at different times in the past. It does happen more
often when attached to a port other then one on the tower but I did
have it happen when connected to the tower at least a few times (in 3+
years of use).
