Hi John
Perhaps you need Plumstone? This enables Mac Java programs to use
the standard javax.sound.midi package rather than making non-portable
calls to Core Midi. In particular, a call to
MidiSystem.getMidiDevices () returns a list of all attached MIDI
devices.
Find Plumstone on my web-site:
http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/~lrlang/plumstone/index.html
BTW, I recommend you move to Java 1.4.2 - or, even better, upgrade to
Tiger and Java 1.5
Cheers
Bob Lang

I'm currently using 10.3.8 and SDK 1.3 - has any additional java
midi support been implemented since then? Specifically, has a java
equivalent of the very handy CoreAudio::MIDIObjectFindByUniqueID()
been implemented?
All that iterating through Devices, ExternalDevices, and MIDISetup
gets just a little irritating.
