problems with 2 828's and a PB 1 gHz

Can anyone think of any inherent problems with daisy chaining two MOTU 828 interfaces via Firewire, running off of a PowerBook 1 GHz with 768k ram under 10.3.9?

For some reason the one unit (I'll call it the "evil" interface) misbehaves no matter...

1. where in the chain
2. slave or master
3. which firewire port (I have one on a PCMCIA card)
4. which cable
5. connected to the other unit or not

The "evil interface" refuses to work no matter how it's connected to the computer. I have attached each unit to each FW port; I've swapped ports, swapped cables, dasiy-chained one off the other, vice versa, etc, etc.

The "good interface" (Glenda, I guess) works fine no matter how it's connected (even while the other unit is going bad).

The traits exhibited by the evil interface are:

1. resetting itself
2. locking up
3. zeroing all front panel display faders (and CueMix faders as well)
4. sluggish response on the CueMix fader

The weird thing is, the evil unit works great standalone (most of the time--it has reset itself a couple of times, but not after being removed from the studio for a while). Once I reconnect it to the computer, it starts acting up again.

Someone please help me understand what it is that's going on. It's a mystery to me. And I don't need mystery--I need to finish a project. Help!
