Yes. The data source, like all controls on a piece of hardware, are
global to the system. They're just like the knobs on the front panel.
This is one of the reasons why most apps should be written in a way
so as to not need to play about with them.
When I set the output data source on built-in audio on a Powermac
G5 to Digital Out, audio is still played on the Line Out. Is this
because I don't have a device hooked up to the Digital Out? Or is
this always the case?
I'll admit up front that my memory is a bit hazy on this topic. I
could be wrong. The definitive guide would be the tech note
describing the particular machine.
At any rate, I think whether or not the audio goes out both jacks or
not depends on the model of the machine. So, I think this is probably
expected behavior.
