One thing you may be missing is that these apps may be proprietary,
but the HAL gives you a hook so that you can launch them in the form
of kAudioDevicePropertyConfigurationApplication. Drivers for devices
that have custom config apps are supposed to provide this property so
that you have a bundle ID your app can launch for custom
configuration options.

Yes, but I would rather not require the application I am developing
to work with only one interface, via that interface's proprietary
control. I was crossing my fingers that interface makers would use
the core-audio API so my application could be hardware
independent... mostly.

To my knowledge, no one implements the play through controls,
including the MotU driver.
That said, most if not all of the devices that support play
through also provide a configuration application that allow you
access to the functionality. For example, MotU has their various
FireWire console apps and Metric Halo has their MIO Console app.

Does any one out there know if direct hardware monitoring
(playthough) via the core-audio interface has been added by MOTU
to thier interfaces with the new core-audio drivers they recently
announced? MOTU's web sight mentions "Talkback" capability, but
it only states that it has been added to there control console,
not to there driver itself.
Any other audio interface makers doing anything with playthough
via core-audio? I really need some hardware with this capability!
