I suppose you've looked at the PhantomAudioDriver sample? Though I don't know if it's updated for Intel processor. If you search the archives, you'll see I had some exchanges a few months back about using the clip and convert routines. Tommy

is there any generic implementation of the conversion functions for
IOAudioClips in kernel extensions kexts which are optimized for both
  PowerPC and Intel processors? Maybe one which uses an abstraction
layer?

Any hint is appreciated.
