This is largely implemented in the AUIOElement classes. What you need
to do is have a look through that class and then be prepared to
describe the different channel layouts for the num channels. I can't
give you a coded example at the moment, but the AUMatrixReverb
implements these layouts for its output and auval will test that this
behaves correctly. It is a pretty simple concept to implement - you
are describing the order/meaning of channels.
