After some experimenting and a few tips I was able to accomplish the
ducking in a 'desirable' result. I'm sure a profession ducking solution
would be better. But here what I did:
FCP 5:
1. Create a sequence: Sequence 1
2. Drag Music track in track one (a1/a2)
3. Drag voices track 2 (a3/a4) I made sure that voice stereo... haven't
tested it with mono....
4. Now lower the global volume of A1/A2 with 10db
5. Increase the global volume of A3/A4 with 10 db
These above values depends on your music/voice files... so experiment
with it.
6. Create a new Sequence: "Sequence with Filter"
7. Drag in this Sequence the Sequence 1.
8. Select the Audio Track a1/a2
9. Add a compressor filter. i use Apple->AUDynamicProcessor.
I put attack time 0.11 and release time 1.64
Important I put the Compression Treshold to -60 (but this value also
depends on media
Play around with the above parameters to get the desired result.
I know not 100% perfect as a professional ducking mixer/filter... but
the result I got was quiet good for my media.
So it would be less work then writing my own ducking mixer...

Sounds like you need a dynamics processor called ducker. The ducker
will process the music track using a side chain input from the voice
track, by reducing the volume of the music when the voice is above a
certain threshold. I think there are few of those around (some of them
might not use the name ducker), but I'm not sure if either FCP or
Soundtrack supports side-chaining.

hi,
is it possible to write a audio-unit component for final cut pro or
soundtrack that would have 2 audio tracks as input?
because I want to create the following Mixer:
Then the voice track starts to speak the volume of the music needs to
go down. I can write a standalone application that do this, just
looking for integration in FCP or SoundTrack?
is there maybe already a third party audio unit that does this?
