The problem I have with a custom property is that it seems I will need to
define the number myself.
What is the guarantee that Apple won't use this number later on?

Michael,
The FilterDemo in the latest SDK demonstrates how to use a custom property
to communicate information between the AU and its (cocoa) view. You use
the same methodology regardless of whether your UI is carbon or cocoa.
