You need to check the documentation that is available on your
computer at the following location:
/Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/Documentation/index.html
Also, in the filter demo that Michael suggested you look at, there
are some comments about how to implement custom properties, including
notes about ranges, etc...

Michael,
The FilterDemo in the latest SDK demonstrates how to use a custom
property to communicate information between the AU and its
(cocoa) view. You use the same methodology regardless of whether
your UI is carbon or cocoa.
