I haven't seen a MacBook personally, but if it is like the MacBook
Pro, the driver sends a major engine change and adjusts a bunch of
controls (some change value, others come and go depending on what was
plugged in). To the outside world, it pretty much looks like the only
change was that the data source changed from "internal speakers" to
"line out" or "digital out" if you plug in the funky optical cable.
