I'm new w/ Core Audio, so please forgive me if these are obvious.

Is there a core audio API for creating and managing aggregate/virtual
devices?
Yes - do a search of the list archives for this info.

We'd normally expect users to use AMS (Audio MIDI Setup utility) to do this

Also, is it possible to create a virtual device that uses fewer channels
than what the device supports
no

(e.g. Create a virtual device using just 2
channels of an 8 channel audio output, so that the 2 channels are accessible
to any core-audio app)
what apps are not dealing with 8 channel devices - that is a problem with those apps...
