Given my recent experience, I would advise agains AudioConverter on
MP3 files. Search this mailing list, and you will find that there
are calls of the AudioConverter that will hang -- and not return --
when used on some not-so-perfect MP3 files. Unfortunately, you can
not tell beforehand.
Well, the AudioConverter is a really cool feature provided by
CoreAudio. Malformed MP3 files resulting in memory leak and CPU hang
are not so frequent (correct me if I'm wrong) so maybe the separate
task could be an emergency solution or at least the technique used
when processing a lot of input files where "bad" files could be
marked, moved away or whatever, you get the idea. Once "bad" and
"good" files are separated, then the actual audio processing can be
done within the same process using all the features provided by
CoreAudio.
As I have settled on the AudioConverter, I am currently launching a
seperate task which I kill after a timeout.
I will be glad to provide more information, both on this problem or
on MP3 to PCM conversion (which is what I am doing) if you should
decide to use the AudioConverter
