Controlling input volume while recording

I'm recording audio using the TN2091 method. Is there a way to control
the input volume of the audio being recorded using this method?
Something analogous to the input volume control as shown in the Sound
system preferences. I don't want to change the global value, just the
value of the input unit, if possible. Perhaps a property of the input
unit? I see kAudioUnitParameterUnit_Decibels and
kAudioUnitParameterUnit_LinearGain. At least for the latter, I get a
kAudioUnitErr_InvalidScope error while trying to use it.
