AMS and the Prefs Panel talk directly to the HAL in order to control
the hardware volume. You can see samples of doing this in the HALLab
sample code (/Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/HAL/HALLab).

Something analogous to the input volume control as shown in the Sound
system preferences. I don't want to change the global value, just the
value of the input unit, if possible. Perhaps a property of the input
unit? I see kAudioUnitParameterUnit_Decibels and
kAudioUnitParameterUnit_LinearGain. At least for the latter, I get a
kAudioUnitErr_InvalidScope error while trying to use it.
