AUFilePlayer volume levels?

Hi,

does anyone know how to get at the volume levels currently being played through an AUFilePlayer? Do I really have to do all that work setting up a mixer component to ask it for its peak? I tried setting kAudioUnitProperty_MeteringMode on the output unit/AUFilePlayer unit, and then calling kAudioUnitProperty_MeterClipping, but I always get an error about an invalid property from AudioUnitGetProperty().

Has anybody done this before? Ideally, I'd want to get volume levels for each channel separately. Sadly, not even the data types these two properties take is documented anywhere (well of course there's AudioUnitMeterClipping, so I can assume that's what getting kAudioUnitProperty_MeterClipping will return), so I'm pretty clueless where to get any information on what AUs support this etc.

 Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
