Internal speaker/headphone software switch

Hello,

I would like to develop a software switch between internal speakers and headphones. I have been looking on forums to see feasibility, however the few posts I found mentioned a "hard" switch to the jack channel when a headphone is plugged.
If this is true, I don't get why there is a beep through internal speakers when you reboot even if headphones are plugged.

Is it possible to implement a software switch, and if yes could you direct me to the functions to be used? (and if yes, would that be dependent on the type of mac you're using?)

Regards,
Jeff
