A quick question i have been reading through the Audio Unit AIP and tutorial and have found that lots of variables begin the letter k or m. Is there any significance to this? I.e. does it affect the operation of the variable? or is it just a tradition thing? As i haven't found any reference to any significance in the documentation.

It's a tradition indicating what kind of symbol it is. A 'k' prefix means that it's a constant. A 'm' prefix means that it's a member of a struct or a class.

Failure is not an option. It is a privilege reserved for those who try.
