Also, I remember a while back there being a series of emails from Brian Whitman about the AudioFile API crashing when encountering certain malformed (but common) AIFF files. Was this ever fixed? If so, in which version of Mac OS X?

The crash we were having was with malformed mp3 files, which I believe has been fixed in 10.4.7 or 8. I can't guarantee the accuracy of that, but my test bad file ( http://variogr.am/clarity.mp3 ) no longer locks and crashes AU Lab or afinfo in 10.4.9.

There's also an issue with the tools not following type or creator codes (e.g., rename file.m4a to file.mp3 -- iTunes & QT will still play it fine but the audiofile api will break.) That's still there and I don't know if it's scheduled to get fixed.
