There's no mixing - we do have channel mapping through the audio converter's channel map property (you can get the audio converter from the ExtAF object)

In my experience, the channels are not mixed, though the minimal contract has been upheld: I convert a mono-aif file to two channel LPCM and find that one of the channels is blank. I think you've got to manually add a mixer unit into the graph to get what I would consider proper conversion of formats with differing channels per frame.

Will the ExtAudioFile / AudioConverter API convert between stream formats with different numbers of channels? In other words, if I ExtAudioFileOpen() a file, and then set the kExtAudioFileProperty_ClientDataFormat property with an AudioStreamBasicDescription.mChannelsPerFrame value different than that in the kExtAudioFileProperty_FileDataFormat property's value, will then calling ExtAudioFileRead() successfully convert up to more channels or down to fewer channels in the output buffers, or does this not work?

Also, I remember a while back there being a series of emails from Brian Whitman about the AudioFile API crashing when encountering certain malformed (but common) AIFF files. Was this ever fixed? If so, in which version of Mac OS X?

thanks,
Sophia
