Yes. I would use the incoming data to perform my own analysis and
then pass it on unchanged to the unit's output. I would store the
analysis result in a property that could be read after all the data
has been processed.
The advantage I can see of setting up the analysis with Audio Units
is that I can chain several analyzers, and that I can use the
AUFilePlayerUnit (on 10.4?). That's what I figure. Core Audio is
quite intimidating (to a Cocoa jockey like me) so any advice or
guidance would be most welcome!
