Generic OUTGOING data to view?

This is maybe a stupid question, but if it's not I'll be very interested in learning more (if it is, the answer is 'no, of course not').

Is there any way in a GENERIC AU plugin- one where the host makes the view for it- to send data such as a line of text, a numerical readout etc back out to the plugin to be displayed on the screen? (which of course is what Carbon and Cocoa views are for in the first place)
