AudioUnitSetParameter vs AUParameterSet

Under what circumstances would AudioUnitSetParameter return noErr and AUParameterSet return kAudioUnitErr_InvalidParameter when given the exact same values?

Stepping through the AU code shows that the parameter is indeed being set and returns no error, but something inside AUParameterSet is creating that error.

Whahappen?
