Hi all,
incidentally, I've been looking into this just recently after an email
from Ted Fawcett and the good news is that Apple got it *almost* right
in 3.1 - it is only one (very minor) issue that prevents the template
from working as it should.
Since the plug in that you create with the template actually works and
also displays its generic UI it is understandable that the problem is
hard to determine for someone who is testing it. Also, I wanted to add
that we all make mistakes and although I agree that this has been an
annoying problem for quite some time now (no less for me!) I believe
that there's no need to take any of this personally.
These applications are all incredibly complex and my hat is off to the
guys at Apple for doing such an extraordinarily good job creating and
maintaining them, as well as for providing excellent support such as
the bug reporter web site and this list. For me, being on a Mac since
1992 these are exciting times and looking at where we are now this
disfunctional template is just a minor inconvenience - nothing in
comparison to the hoops you had to jump through on MacOS 7, believe
me! ;-)
Now, based on the information that I have collected so far I have
created a replacement template that fixes the issue. If you replace
the one that comes with your Xcode 3.1 installation with the new one
available at
http://stephan.bernsee.com/BetterCocoaAU.zip
you should be able to create working Cocoa View AU plug ins in no time.
I'm sure we will see the change I made implemented in the next
revision of the template and until then the replacement template
should do the job just as well.
Hope this helps,
Stephan
