I'm actually pretty sure that its not even "mutually exclusive" from your definition. Check out the bug mentioned here,
http://xrl.us/bgnmg, it seems to me that its possible for the same Audio to go through both outputs at the same time.
I think what Jeff is saying is that whether its an actual hardware based limitation or not exposed by the driver software doesn't really matter since CA doesn't support it.
