the right question

I'm having some difficulty formulating the right question about a problem I'm having with my music program, AttonalComposer, but here's my best shot.

AttonalComposer generates a series of audio "frames" which I would like to send to back-end code to be played through the Mac loudspeakers or stored in an audio file (AIFF, WAV, etc).

Currently, I'm trying to adapt code from James McCartney's Sinewave demo as a back end, but I'm running into problems with it having to do with deprecated functions and multithreading.

My questions are: (1) is there a simple pre-existing back end that I can use? (2) how do I use it?

I know very little about CoreAudio, which I gather is very complex, and would like to get on with my project rather than spend hours attempting to understand CoreAudio any more deeply than I really need to.
