Bob,

I develop high end usb audio dacs. I might suggest the Creative Sound Blaster X-FI 5.1.

I actually have not heard or used this one but I do have their X-Mod device. It does enumerate for 5.1 and uses a DSP to actually create a 5.1 experience with only a stereo output. Being that it does enumerate for 5.1 Audio Midi does recognize it as such. Therefore I would think the X-FI 5.1 would also do the same and it's only $60.

All USB Audio devices can run up too 210k sampling rate. Most of the problem comes into play as too if the devices is Full Speed (12MHZ) or High Speed (480MHZ). You can have complaint devices at each speed.

For 44.1 six channel that is merely 576 bytes per millisecond or like 4.608Mbps which would work with controllers in either the 1.1 specification or the 2.0 in Full or High Speed.

I am not sure what you application is and I always say you get what you pay for. But some of the bigger companies can crank out this stuff pretty well. I mean I could never get to a price like that and have the COG's of that device has.

As far as the MAC driving this... well it's going to do a hell of lot better than a pc would. My custom controller runs USB in Asynchronous mode at 24/96 which would be a little more than what you are asking at 16/44.1 * 6 and I have no problem even with older iBooks. The only reason this would not work with a mac is if you have really old machines. But most MAC's that have 2.0 USB Host controllers will work fine and if you are talking about ones that can house PCI cards then you should not have a problem.

Thanks
Gordon
