That was one idea we had too - that the audio range of -1 < 1 could be
used for mapping min < max values - it also avoided the problem of
trying to specify a parameter range in the parameter stream, etc. All
adding up to not creating a new stream format, but leaving it to you
guys to do something creative with

Couldn't you actually use audio to bus your control signal just like
a real patch cable - eat cpu, but I think you could parameter
modulate at up to 1/2 the sample rate & get true sample accurate
parameter automation, build a truly modular digital synth system for
instance where any audio output can be used to modulate any
parameter. Isn't that the way it should be? Some of the old analog
step sequencers for instance could be set to run at such a high
speed that they would effectively become FM Oscillators. Haven't
seen that type of modulation ability in any plug in.

I have long considered the potential to bus around the equivalent
of "control voltage" signals, just as flexibly as if they were
audio. If parameter event streams were added to the buses that AUs
see, then we could build modular synthesis graphs as easily as
audio processing graphs. This idea is a bit contrary to
AudioUnits, since the user might want a different graph for
modulation control signals as compared to the audio routing, but if
the parameter event streams were added, it would go a long way
towards this possibility.

As for a stream of parameter events... we had this notion in
general sometime ago and we even defined in specific format type
for this kind of control stream (see CoreAudio/CoreAudioTypes.h)
However, there didn't seem to be a general interest in providing a
sample by sample parameter stream, so we've basically not done
anything further on it.
Audio units in general are pretty agnostic about what format they
see on given buses, so its something we could add if there was
sufficient interest from both AU and host app developers
