IAC deprecated?

Hello.

Newbie question:  I thought I wanted to use the IAC
to connect some code to Digital Performer, but when
I found the IAC documents, they were all marked as
being obsolete, etc.  So why does the IAC always
show up in the AudioMIDISetup program as a default
MIDI interface?  Has it been replaced by something
more modern, and if so, how do I find the new
documentation?
