Hi,
I am currently doing research in the field of realtime audio feature
extraction for visualization purposes. Basically I am building an
AudioGraph and using AudioUnits to analyze the stream and feed a
graphics layer (similar to the SonogramDemo). Of course you would
want the lowest latency possible during the whole process.
Now, to test my results in a real-world scenario, I'd need a
reliable multi-channel audio interface that offers stable core audio
drivers and very low latency AD-conversion (preferably with pre-
amps). I am neither asking for a buyer's guide, nor I want to start
a discussion on anybody's favourite interface, but I would
appreciate any recommendations for this kind of use case.
So I guess it boils down to these two questions:
Which interfaces are known for a very low latency for Analog ->
Digital -> AudioUnit Host flow?
Will a firewire interface be fast enough to convert 8 simultaneous
input streams and feed the AudioUnits in realtime
Yes.
Feel free to check out our interfaces:

The 2882 is probably what you would be interested in (8 channels with
preamps), very low latency drivers, Firewire.
We have very, very low safety offsets in our driver, so it would meet
your requirements.
Hope this helps.
