Meanwhile, you can try to write your own synth, and see if there is
enough processing power in the iPhone to handle anything close to
what the DLS Synth does. The processor in the iPhone is really
impressive for its size and power, but it can't do what a laptop does.

I'd love to be able to port some music code to the iPhone that uses
CoreAudio's DLS Synth on OSX. Not just because the sounds are
pretty good, but because one can do microtonal adjustments with
MusicDeviceStartNote - I had figured surely basic synth capability
would have made the cut in the iPhone. But apparently not? This
would enable a whole host of nifty apps.
File a bug report with Apple. I've done the same. If enough of us do
it we increase the chances of a synth making it into future revisions.
