Audio Unit Starting and Stopping on iPhone

I am using the RemoteIO unit in an iPhone app to play a wav file from memory. When OS 3.0 came out, the app developed a problem. The first time I play the file everything works great. When I stop the RemoteIO unit and the then start playing it again, it requires almost 50% more processing power and starts to stutter the audio. I can then stop the player and play it again and it works fine. Then stop, play, and it's stuttering again. I can repeat this process over and over and always I get this processor max-out every other time when trying to play the file. I've poured over my code with a fine tooth comb and I feel like it must be the audio unit that's causing this. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?
