I think you're forgetting all the pro apps like Timefactory etc. Here
is a good overview:

The problem with the apps you mention is that they're using Apple's
built-in pitch synchronous phase vocoder algorithm, which isn't really
usable for anything except a preview for all the modulation/distortion
and phasiness that you get.

I personally use Timefactory (http://www.prosoniq.com). It's
non-realtime but has by far the best quality.
