Will AVAudioPlayer play mono files on iPhone?

I'm trying to play some short uncompressed files using AVAudioPlayer, but my standard

afconvert infile outfile -f caff -d LEI16

Doesn't work. When I play the file, the left channel sounds fine but the right channel is bad. My stereo files are playing fine.

Is this possible? I'm trying to save space in the app.
