Where can I learn about audio software design?

Hi.
I'm starting to deal a lot with audio software because of my studies
and future interests.
But I've no background in computer science (only in math and some music),
so when a little more work has to be done (ie, many malloc calls and
mathematical operations),
programs become heavy.
Is it just about memory management and optimization libraries (like
Carbon's Performance framework)
or there are tips and tricks specific for audio that
someone has already packaged in a book or article or blog?
Such information would be of great importance.
Thank you.
Marcelo Cicconet.
