I have tested opening a plug-in in 64bit and an error was returned. So do you mean that it is possible to create a component with 64bit support and then the host would be able to open it in 64bit mode? The VST specification has a query function asking for doubles support.

For high quality audio several kind of processors need that precision. The best example is convolution for real reverb simulation. We have done testing and the difference is audible.
Our DAW Audiohive deals with doubles throughout the audio paths (along with unlimited sample rate). It is a shame loosing precision at every plug-in stage.
