Bill,
I have tested opening a plug-in in 64bit and an error was returned.
So do you mean that it is possible to create a component with 64bit
support and then the host would be able to open it in 64bit mode?
The VST specification has a query function asking for doubles support.
We haven't described double-sample format support yet for AU, so we
don't have any direct API to publish.
On the purely mechanical front, there is no limiation in the AU spec
(we designed this with this kind of thing in mind) to support double-
sample format - for example, this can be completely desribed with an
ASBD.
I'm also going to refer to this as double support (or maybe something
else), because I don't want people getting confused with the more
general 64bit support (64 bit address space) which is a feature in
Leopard, and is fully supported by audio units since then.
For high quality audio several kind of processors need that
precision. The best example is convolution for real reverb
simulation. We have done testing and the difference is audible.
I can understand the "interior calculations" of an algorithm - we have
some of our DSP that uses double resolution internally
Our DAW Audiohive deals with doubles throughout the audio paths
(along with unlimited sample rate). It is a shame loosing precision
at every plug-in stage.
Yes, sure. But I do wonder if this is more of a theoretical concern
than a practical one.
